Kia Introduces Yet Another Option For Families

Kia has totally remodeled its popular Sorento for 2021 by giving the vehicle a more rugged midsize SUV look, a departure from its previous styling. The new Sorento also boasts a larger wheelbase and a redesigned interior reminiscent of its top-ranked cousin, the Telluride. If you are interested in a new midsize SUV, here is what you need to know about the 2021 Sorento.

If you are familiar with previous models of the Sorento, you may remember its curvy, minivan-style exterior. For the new 2021 model, Kia has abandoned that look in favor of a boxier silhouette, giving it a sharper, more modern image. An expanded grille now integrates the front LED headlights, and a lower, wider bumper adds to the prominence of the vehicle’s front end. There are five trims available: the LX, S, EX, SX, and SX-Prestige, the last of which features 20-inch wheels, giving you an extra 8.3 inches of ride height.

Despite the more muscular look, the new Sorento is actually lighter than the previous model by about 3.1%. That works out to a loss of 119 pounds. However, the car’s average tensile strength is up 4%. This is thanks to the use of the N5 architecture, the same design underpinning the Kia K5. Not only does this give the Sorento added strength and less weight, but it also improves the driving dynamics.

The Telluride offers just one engine—Kia's 3.8-liter V-6—but the Sorento offers more choices under the hood. Base models employ a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder. Sorento EX models and above benefit from a torque-rich turbocharged 2.5-liter I-4, and the new Sorento is available with a hybrid powertrain for the first time. The Sorento will gain a plug-in hybrid option later this year. Take a look at the power numbers below.

As the smaller, lighter vehicle, it's no surprise the Sorento offers superior fuel economy to its big sibling. Unlike the Telluride, Kia's smaller three-row also offers a hybrid variant that drastically reduces fuel consumption and cost compared to its conventionally powered counterparts.

Should the pavement prove twisty, the Sorento will definitely feel sportier than its larger sibling. Kia's smaller three-row rides firm but not harsh. It provides more control should you start driving enthusiastically. The optional turbo engine's extra torque means the Sorento will feel quicker, too.

Which 3rd row Kia makes more sense for you depends entirely on how you'll use it. If you regularly require seating for eight, tow a hefty trailer, or can afford to spend more up front and on fuel, the Telluride is a great choice. On the other hand, for those that don't require the extra space or capability, occasionally find themselves driving enthusiastically, or want to save some cash will find the Sorento the wiser pick. Both are strong competitors in their respective segments; it's hard to go wrong.
